Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

One of the most encouraging truths in all of Scripture is that every person is fearfully and wonderfully made by God. In a world where people often struggle with self doubt, insecurity, and comparison, God’s Word reminds us that our lives are not accidents. We were intentionally created by a loving Creator who designed us with purpose and care.

King David expressed this truth beautifully in Psalm 139. As he reflected on God’s knowledge and involvement in his life, he recognized the wonder of God’s creation.

Psalm 139:14 says, “I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.”

This verse reveals that every human being is a masterpiece of God’s design. The phrase “fearfully and wonderfully made” speaks of the awe, wisdom, and care that God used when creating each person. God did not create anyone carelessly. Every life has value because it comes from Him.

Many people struggle with accepting themselves. They may dislike their appearance, compare themselves to others, or feel inadequate because they do not meet certain standards. Society constantly promotes unrealistic expectations that can leave people feeling discouraged. God’s perspective is completely different. He does not evaluate people according to worldly standards. He sees each person as His unique creation.

Genesis 1:27 says, “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him.”

Because we are created in God’s image, our worth is not determined by physical appearance, social status, or personal achievements. Our value comes from the fact that we belong to God and reflect His creative work.

David continued by describing God’s involvement before his birth.

Psalm 139:13 says, “For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s womb.”

This verse reminds us that God was actively involved in our formation before we ever entered the world. He knew us before anyone else did. He saw our lives before we took our first breath. Nothing about us is hidden from Him.

Jeremiah experienced this same truth when God called him into ministry.

Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee.”

God’s knowledge of us begins before birth. He not only creates us but also has a purpose for our lives. Understanding this truth helps us see that our lives are meaningful and valuable.

Being fearfully and wonderfully made does not mean that we are perfect. Every person has weaknesses, limitations, and struggles. However, God often works through those weaknesses to display His strength.

The Apostle Paul learned this lesson when he struggled with a difficult burden in his life. God’s response was found in 2 Corinthians 12:9:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

God does not expect us to rely solely on our own abilities. Instead, He invites us to depend on His strength. Our weaknesses do not diminish our value in His eyes. They create opportunities for His power to be revealed.

Another important aspect of being fearfully and wonderfully made is recognizing that God has given every person unique gifts and abilities.

Romans 12:6 says, “Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us.”

God did not create everyone to be the same. Each believer has unique talents, experiences, and callings. Rather than comparing ourselves to others, we should appreciate the gifts God has given us and use them for His glory.

Comparison is one of the greatest enemies of contentment. When people constantly compare themselves to others, they often overlook the beauty of how God created them. God never intended for us to copy someone else’s life. He created us with individual purposes and unique assignments.

Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works.”

The word workmanship refers to something carefully crafted by a skilled artist. God is the Master Creator, and every believer is part of His handiwork. He continues shaping and developing us according to His purpose.

Understanding that you are fearfully and wonderfully made should change how you see yourself. Instead of focusing on flaws, you can focus on God’s craftsmanship. Instead of dwelling on weaknesses, you can trust God’s strength. Instead of comparing yourself to others, you can celebrate the unique person God created you to be.

When you embrace this biblical truth, gratitude replaces insecurity. Confidence replaces self doubt. Hope replaces discouragement. You begin to see yourself through God’s eyes and recognize the incredible value He has placed upon your life.

You are not an accident. You are not forgotten. You are not without purpose. You are fearfully and wonderfully made by a God who knows you, loves you, and has a plan for your life. When you believe this truth, you can walk in confidence, knowing that the Creator of the universe formed you with wisdom, intention, and everlasting love.
